Terra LUME 2014 edges ever closer! And I am getting closer to Brazil: I left England last Friday and am now in Buenos Aires, catching up on some Tango dancing and exploring the sights (and sites) of the city that gave the world this amazing music and dance form. I’ll be arriving in Brazil on 1 February and very much looking forward to starting work with LUME!
As some of you may know, I am
teaching a course called Eccentric, Comic and Popular Dance for Actors and
Clowns (3–7 February at LUME).
This workshop will look at the
many and various possible uses of popular dance forms in contemporary
performance; will investigate the vaudeville tradition and its applications in
modern theatre, performance and clown; and will explore the potential of
eccentric dance in the creation of comic or grotesque characters.
We’ll do some basic training in Jazz and Vaudeville dance,
and explore a number of popular dance rhythms such as Charleston, Tango, and
Mambo and investigate how these can be used for theatrical or comic effect.
We’ll then think about how to use this material to create a new character, or
develop an existing theatrical character or Clown persona – taking as our
inspiration the Silent Movie heroes and stars of the Music Hall.
One of the things we’ll be learning is the famous dance from
the film Way Out West by the magnificent Laurel and Hardy, to the tune of At
the Ball, sung by the Avalon Brothers. Here’s the link to the clip on YouTube:

If you are taking part in the course, I look forward to
meeting you on Monday 3 February. If you are not, but are in Barao Geraldo on
Friday 7 February – come along to LUME at 9pm for a Cabaret style sharing of
some of the work we have done together over the week. Commence the dancing,
commence the prancing! At the ball, that’s all…
Hey, come on Max, everybody is waiting for you, darling! Kiss.
